Thread vs comment vs post...these terms are used differently on different forums, so I'm not gonna get too hung up on that ;P
Short story for the delay is a bunch of absolute fuckwits at the local paint & body shop. How on earth it takes 3 years & 10 months to put a beetle back together after a respray is beyond me. I was about to have the Tribunal help me find out the answer to this question, when finally they found the motivation to put the final few hours into finishing the job they started over 4 years ago.

Sums up alot of panel shops out there unfortunately, unless you stand there and watch them they do stuff all. Panel shop i dealt with once i literally had to visit every day to see progress as they were more concerned about doing insurance jobs. Took long enough and they still didnt do the job you would expect for the time.

That sums it up perfectly. I must've visited hundreds of times, and most times they'd done f@#k all since the last visit. If they had done anything, they'd done it wrong, like putting on the bumpers minus the bracket seals. I've now gotta pop the back window out as well, just to get the headliner back in place. ("we don't do headliners, you'll have to do that yourself"). I've now got 100% new rubbers too, because they managed to lose every single one, along with a bunch of other parts (bumper brackets, door handle, tail light, etc).
But yeah, insurance jobs are their bread & butter. They said as much: "yours was the last resto we ever took on. We only do insurance work now. People wanting restorations are too fussy"
('Fussy' like wanting the seals that were on the car to go back on when it's reassembled...)
