Hi guys, while we were sitting at the bakery on Sunday morning I was chatting to Andrew and Ben about the 69 beetle my father restored for my sister and I said I'd post the details of the guy who reconditioned the engine and gear box.

Back of his card he has:

Cam grinding
Conrod shut and cut and bushes
Line boring
Crankcase machining
Flywheel grind
Cylinder recondition
Gear boxes fully reconditioned
My parents have moved back to Sydney but when Dad was restoring the beetle they were living in Esk, QLD and someone put us onto VW Engineering. Can't remember who it was now...
Turns out the guy builds the trike engines for the trike company in Gosford and he also builds alot of the dune buggy racing engines for the events in the Northern Territory.
We went out and checked out his property when we dropped off the engine and gearbox and he has a 20 ft container with all his own turning and machining equipment and a double garage were he assembles engines and gear boxes.
He really knew his stuff and explained what he did and why he did it in great detail. Really nice bloke and didn't muck us around.
He rebuilds 1600 TP for something like $1800 or $2000 and gear boxes for $800. Call him and he'll run through the costs and what he does.
My sister's engine cost about $2400 and was taken to a 1640 and a new case was used because the old one had a crack in it.
He uses all new parts in the rebuilds. That way he knows the engine will last.
He has a good tranpost guy who will pick up an engine from Sydney for around $85 and the same to send it back. It's cheap because the transport guy is always running up and back betwen the gosford trike place and Plainland.
I've driven the beetle with the rebuilt engine and gearbox and it's nice and tight, I can't fault it.
I was impressed that I'm going to send him up an engine at some point to get done.
