The donkey

Post by Fonz »

It's grey and hopefully it'll be nice and trusty.

Back in November last year I decided to trade in the Peugeot, that had served me well for 8 years and 85,000 miles. It was a 1.4 petrol and I figured it was time to get something a bit better for the long motorway runs. Enter an 8 year old 2.0 GT TDi (140hp)

Will post more tomorrow.

DPF delete and custom code tune make these pull hard.

Manual. :)

Being an early 140 I don't think this one has the DPF. I think it was 2007 onwards that had them. This one's a late 2004.

As you may be able to tell they're the garage's photos. Looks alright, but up close there are a few issues. Can't quite see it in that rear shot but the rear badge has weiss oxidising on the chrome, under the lacquer. Only way to get rid of it it seems is to replace the whole boot handle. (if anyone knows of any good ones, let me know)

The drivers door also seemed to be a bit out of position....

Which they said they would try and sort out (but didn't make it any better). My housemate has since done a better job when he had it in for a service.

The other issue I spotted was this nice flat spot in the bonnet....

Image

Which would be nice to get sorted...but hasn't been prominent enough to bother me too much yet. Don't know if one of those paintless dent removal people could do it?

It's done it's fair share of low temp testing when we had our extended winter this year (that lasted until June!), with many occasions of -10 degrees.

Yeah, right!

Yep. Still away. The donkey's doing a good job of eating up the miles though.

Are the images showing up properly? Only showing the top half for me.

Carefully!

The dustpan did a good job of shovelling off the majority of the snow, fairly safely with the rubber strip on the front edge.

I've found that scraping the ice off the screen can leave scratches in the glass if you're not careful. The hot wasser trick is dangerous because of the sudden change in temp, and hot wasser freezes quicker than cold wasser. Surprisingly, pouring cold wasser on actually works fairly well.

Again, something that doesn't really show up in any of the previous pics is the misting of the headlamp lenses. Something that is apparently quite common on the mk5 plastic lamps over time. The ones on the donkey had become quite bad....

So I hit it with some wet 2000 grit, which got me to this...

Image

...but there were still odd lumps visible around the lens .....

Image

....So I went back and tried 1500 in those areas, followed by 2000, then finished up with a fine cut paste on the rotary, using a compounding pad and after a while I had this.....

To finish up both lenses were then coated with Gtechniq C4, which is a nano-composite coating that should help repel wasser, but more importantly protect against future UV degradation.
